The inaugural International Congress on Science and Skiing (ICSS) took place in St. Christoph am Arlberg, Austria, in 1996.
Since then, the congress has been held in various locations, primarily in Austria, with a notable gathering in Aspen,USA, in 2004.
Under the initial leadership of Professor Erich Müller and the University of Salzburg, the ICSS has consistently consistently covered a broad spectrum of skiing disciplines.
In 2006, a special edition focused on Nordic skiing was introduced in Vuokatti, Finland, under the title International Congress on Skiing and Nordic Skiing (ICSNS).
This specific focus was repeated in Vuokatti in 2012,and 2015, under the leadership of Professors Paavo Komi and Vesa Linnamo.
Since 2019, the congress has continued exclusively under the ICSS name, with the 8th edition in Vuokatti led by Professor Vesa Linnamo
and the 9th edition in Saalbach-Hinterglemm overseen by Professor Thomas Stöggl.
Each edition of the congress features a robust scientific program, attracting over 200 submissions for poster and oral presentations.
These events are complemented by engaging social and sporting activities that highlight the local culinary scene.
Furthermore, following each congress, contributions are compiled and published in either a book or a special issue of a scientific journal.
